Preparation for Your First Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy Session

What to Know Before Your Session
This guide is here to help you feel more at ease as you prepare for your first ketamine-assisted psychotherapy (KAP) session. You don’t need to do everything perfectly—gentle preparation is enough.
Before Your Session

  • Get a good night’s rest the day before, if possible
  • Eat lightly and follow any medical guidance provided
  • Wear comfortable clothing
  • Avoid alcohol or non-prescribed substances
  • Plan for a calm schedule after your session

Setting & Mindset

  • Bring anything that helps you feel safe (a blanket, eye mask, calming music)
  • Set a simple intention, such as “I want to be open” or “I want to listen.”
  • Let go of expectations—there is no “right” experience

During the Session

  • You may notice changes in sensation, emotion, or awareness
  • Your therapist will guide and support you throughout
  • You are always in control and can speak up at any time

After the Session

  • Rest and hydrate
  • Avoid making major decisions right away
  • Be gentle with yourself—emotions may continue to unfold
  • Integration and reflection will be part of the process
